Bulgaria is a country dated back to prehistoric times which shows a diverse landscape. It offers the snow capped Alps, the Pirin and Balkan Mts., as well as, access to the Black Sea, and lowlands in the southern most region of Thrace. Located on the Balkan Peninsula, it is bordered by Turkey,
Greece, Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia, and Romania. Once overseen by the communistic Soviet Union, Bulgaria now is governed by a Parliamentary Republic. The head of state and commander in chief of armed forces, as well as the head of Consultative Council of Security is the seat of the President. The Prime Minister is the principle executive branch of the unicameral Parliament in the capital city, Sofia. Bulgaria joined the European Union early 2007, which will trade its currency the Lev in the future for the Euro. It is also a member of NATO and the United Nations.
This ancient country is the birth place for the second most used alphabet, Cyrillic, in the world. This country\\\'s official language, which is also their mother language, is Bulgarian. However, Turkish and Roman are spoken in the areas as well. The temperate climate that is offered in Bulgaria, give it excellent opportunity for visiting one of the nine acclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Sites; such as the Thracian tombs, the monument of medieval Bulgarian Culture, Pirin National Park and Srebarna Nature Reserve, Nesebar (an important ancient city for naval trade), and Varna Necropolis (a burial site dated as far back as 3200 B.C.). The historically shaped Bulgaria, also houses the biggest astronomical observatory in southern Europe, the Rozhen Observatory. These significant sites give room for culture to intensify immensely.
