Program Description

Named after Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, Linnaeus University (LNU) was established in 2010 when the former Växjö University and Kalmar University merged to form one institution. LNU is currently the second largest university in southern Sweden and boasts an enrollment of approximately 44,000 Swedish and international students from over 60 countries.

The university has two campuses. The main campus is situated in a park-like setting in Växjö, approximately three miles south of the town center and close to a historic country house, Teleborgs Slott. The Växjö campus is centralized with all administrative buildings, classroom spaces, student services, and amenities located on campus. The other campus is in Kalmar, located on the Baltic coast. Kalmar campus facilities are well-integrated into the town center, with Kalmar central train station on one side and the harbor on the other. The Kalmar campus’s proximity to the sea is reflected by an emphasis in ecology, life sciences, marine biology, and international commerce. Due to the distance between Växjö and Kalmar, students will choose to attend one campus for the duration of their study abroad term.

Although most courses at the host university are taught in Swedish, there are hundreds of courses offered in English each academic year in a wide range of disciplines. The university also offers a variety of services for students that includes: 24/7 access to computer labs, a copy and printing center, a student welfare office, an on-campus chapel, gym/fitness facilities, cafés and study spots, and a library that houses a European Documentation Center, specializing in information and documents related to the European Union.
